How to work out what content your audience actually want to read from you?

Feb 3, 2021 | Content Marketing

Content creation can be a super overwhelming process!!

Trying to work out…

What type of posts to create

What blog topic to write about

What to write in your marketing emails

… that your audience is actually going to want to read, can be the death of all of us as business owners.

This can lead to a real overwhelm in your content creation process, which can then mean that you end up not creating any content at all, or worse creating content that your audience doesn’t want to read, hence wasting your own time and turning off your audience.

Eeekkk, nobody want’s that!

To make your life way easier (which is what I am here for) I’m going to list my top four ways that you can use to find out what your audience really want to hear from you. You can try one of these options or even all of them to really help create content that your audience is going to love- hence turning your audience into loyal paying customers.

Because when you can get the content strategy right and you can speak directly to the heart of your audience, then you are able to build that KNOW, LIKE & TRUST factor.

And that secret factor my friend, leads to growth in your business.

Woohoo, let’s dig straight in!

1. Send an EDM asking your list to hit reply

The first point that I’m going to make is about using your email list audience to find out what type of things they want to hear or learn from you. Basically all you need to do is, send a simple EDM (electronic direct mail, or email in simple terms) out to your list that asks them what they want to hear from you. It’s that simple dude! Make sure that you don’t make it too over the top or include too much information or words as this can stop them from hitting reply. So just a simple, “I need your help” question, “hit reply on this email and tell me what else you want to see from me” can do an amazing job of giving you an idea of what your email list audience want to know from you.

2. Create Polls in Instagram

The next point is about using your Instagram audience and the Instagram stories features to find out what your audience wants to know from you. So there are two ways that you can do this. The first way is by using the polls feature which gives you the option to add your two alternate answers ‘yes or no’, as answers to your questions. In this situation, you do have to come up with the ideas yourself but it can give you an idea of which topics they want to hear about more than others and then you can niche down those broad topics into a lot of smaller content based on the topics that they vote for.

Another sticker that you can use in your Instagram stories is the question sticker. Now, this sticker doesn’t generally get as much use as the polls as obviously it’s a lot more effort for someone to answer your question sticker than it is for them to just vote on your poll, so this can lead to getting a lot fewer answers. But sometimes you can get some really great ideas from the question sticker from your most loyal engaged audience members which can give you some really great content ideas that you haven’t thought of before.

3. DM five of your most active followers

This option requires a little bit more effort on your behalf but is really great to know exactly what your dream customers want to learn or hear about from you. A lot of the other options are going to give you some vague ideas, where as this can be really specific and very down to the point of what your dream customers want to hear from you.

So what I suggest you do, is pick up five of your most active followers on Instagram. So these are the people that comment on all your posts, you already hang out with them in the DM’s on a regular basis and you have built good Instagram relationships with these people. They would be what you would consider your ideal clients or dream customers. All you have to do is DM them with a really lovely and personal message saying that you’re putting together content to help your audience more on Instagram and you would love their feedback on what they would want to hear more about from you, how you can help them more and any other thoughts they have around content they would love to see on your social media or your blog. Generally, these people would love to help you and will reply and give you lots of ideas and be super helpful to your content creation process.

4. Look at your top-performing posts in Instagram

My final suggestion is about doing an analysis of the content you’ve already posted and looking at what’s been performing best you can know what to create more of. When you go into your Instagram analytics you can have a look at your top-performing posts and see what topics have been performing better in the last, say, three months on your Instagram. So the way we look at this is we would look at the post that has reached the most number of people or the posts that have got the most engagement (likes comments and saves). As these are the posts that people resonate with the most or really connected with. These are the ones that you should create more of!

This part of the process might sound confusing, so I will break it down for you. So for example on my Instagram, recently I had a post perform well that is about finding confidence when showing up on Instagram stories. Many people commented and DM’d me from it. So now that I have seen the results from that post I would think “okay people are struggling with showing up on stories or people struggle with knowing what to say on stories or just doing stories in general, so I’m going to create a series of posts all about showing up on stories”.

So these are my top ways for you to work out what your audience really want to hear from you. I hope that this is really helpful for you and just gives you more confidence in knowing what type of content you should be creating to really attract your dream audience and then turn your dream audience into paying customers.

I live on Instagram, so jump back over to my Insta to send me a DM with any questions you have about this topic, or just to connect with me.
